The other week I spent a fun filled day working with some of the great staff at Hyphen Magazine (a non-profit magazine focusing on Asian-American topics, you can subscribe by following the link). What started as a simple article about me and my new JujuChan product written by Margot Seeto, then became more and then even more, ending up with a section about my top 5 Asian hair offenses, now, because pictures speak louder than words, we ended up doing a photo session to try to capture my looks.
Thanks to Andria Lo and Erica Jones (from Hyphen) who took this to the next level, who then introduced me to the photographer Patrick Gonzales Rafanan and his lovely assistant Lydia Ortiz, both from Soybaby. The make up artist on the shoot was Elaine Fujii who captured all the looks to go with the dreaded hairstyles, not an easy feat, I know. Also Thanks to Scott Klassen from Dekko salon who came along to help me with the hair, doing such a great job on our Taiwanese/Mall fringe look : )
It was an ultra fun shoot, I have never done a shoot where we needed to make sure everyone looked BAD.. quite hard I must say, difficult when your models put the bad wigs on and end up looking abit hip!! Not our idea, but we got there in the end..
Thanks to all our models from the shoot for having such a great sense of humor an allowing us to make them look bad and foolish, such great sports, so thumbs up to you all : )

Fekkai – Heat Activated Wave Spray:
I find some of Frederick Fekkai’s Hair Products to be great, this one is his heat activated Wave Spray which works by misting it onto the damp hair and using a hair dryer to create a tousled, ‘beachy’ look, by shaping it with your fingers while it dries.
I didnt love this one as much as some of Fekkai’s other stuff, I found it left the hair with abit of a dry and coarse feeling afterwards, with the hair frizzing quite easily. Some of his curly hair products gave my hair a much nicer softer beachier feel than this one did. Maybe this one might work better on finer hair?
Wanted to do a special post on my very good friend Stevie. I was lucky enough to meet Stevie during his younger days at MTV Asia, dancing around the offices as a Production Assistant.
Nowadays Stevie is a major celebrity interviewer and is based in New York, Hong Kong, LA, in fact he’s all over the joint interviewing just about every celebrity who is anyone out there! Check him out on Star TV’s VIP Access on You tube interviewing everyone, very coolly too, I might add!

OK, so enough Stevie promotion, I chose to have Stevie on my blog because he has the worst type of Asian hair ever!! That typical type of sticky out, swirly bog brush type of hair (sorry Stevie : () So we got him into Dekko Salon and got Scott Klasssen to do his magic makeover. Stevie's hair was just abit overgrown when he came in and Scott decided to give him a short tight cute haircut that can me either stuck up or flattened down depending on what mood Stevie was in…
I think we can all agree that Stevie looks sooooo cute, its unbearable!! Thank luv’!! And thanks to Scott for fighting all those cowlicks and swirls…

FALSE!!
A: Split ends cannot be fixed, you can only cut them off, once they are split, they are split, although they can be masked with treatments and other products, they are still split!
So here’s Katie who came to Dekko salon with her long overgrown hair, Katie’s hair is naturally curly at the back of the head and then the front and sides are pretty straight. She wanted to have something that could could wear curly or straight.
We kept Katie’s hair on the long side but decided to cut the layers to a medium length. With the front area, we made it much more definite so that the straighter hair could form a stronger look with or without blow-drying. I always think with this type of hair, its much better to have it straight on the front areas rather than the other way round of having it straight at the back and curly at the front, which would make it very hard to control. After the cut, we blow dried the hair straight, using a straightening balm to help smooth the ends more and to hold it in place. Here’s Katie after the cut, she definitely looks alot cuter don’t you think?

I’m sort of sitting on the fence on this one, mainly because I see he’s tried very hard to be different and to stand out from the crowd, which I have to give him credit for, and even with all the combinations of potential disaster, he doesn't look TOO bad!!
Jonathan Antins ‘DIRT’
DIRT was a big success from day one, and so I had to give it a try, I found it was a great consistency to work with, for short, medium or longer hair, altho I would tend to use this on short to medium. It gives the hair a matte, messy, textured look that held well. What’s good about it is the ease of washing it out, water based, it washes out easy. For those of you who dont’ like matte looking hair, Jonathan has just brought out another product with shine to it.
So well done Jonathan, who’s shown he’s not just a pretty face!
I have always been a fan of headpieces for the hair. I love feathers and fabrics and flowers. I know they are abit dramatic but I love abit of drama!! Here’s some more over the top ones that I found from the catwalk..
I know, very few people would wear this for everyday wear but here (below) are some of my favorites from Laura Kranitz which are abit more wearable. This Pink feather looks fantastic and adds a touch of individuality to a person…So here’s my very own headpieces.. I know!! One of them is actually a pair of earrings, but hey it adds to the hair and complements it by making it more decorative so it still counts. I picked up these pieces at the weekend Craft Fair in San Francisco and they were made by Jeeyun Ha from Brooklyn, New York, who hand dyes the feathers herself. Love them!!
I mentioned to you before that I would continue to look for these messy updo’s that I love so much. Anyway here’s another one I found which worked on the same lines. Nothing neat an tidy and very thrown together to acheive a distorted shape.
Add the curls (whether natural or put in) and its right up my alley – Gorgeous!!!
The latest color technique Ombre is such a huge trend right now both in the US and the UK.
‘Ombre’ is an French word meaning ‘shaded’, it means colors graduating from light to dark, or from one color to another. It can refer to yarn dye or in printing.
In terms of hair color, the main idea is to go from darker roots to lighter ends, altho some go from lighter roots to darker ends, Colors can range from mainstream subtle to crazier colors. Personally I think this may have come about because people became too lazy or ‘skint’ to have their roots done as often as they usually do, so it became a trend when people like Drew Barrymore and Alexa Chung started sporting this look and ending up so hip with it, that everyone wanted to follow suit…

The IFB (International Fashion Bloggers) held some conferences this week, so my products were featured in the bags at this event, so lets hope these bloggers give me some post space : )

I felt the need to write this post to help people understand why hairdressing salon’s may have a cancellation fee as part of their company policy. One of the good things about having a blog is being able to express my opinion through it especially as I know this can be a touchy subject.
In all my years as a hairstylist in various salons, one of my pet peeves is how people/clients either no show or cancel late. For some unknown reason I have personally found this more noticeable since my move to California, USA. (maybe due to the laid-back casual attitude?)
In most reputable salons, there will be a 24hour cancellation policy, (as with Dr’s offices, massages, beauty treatments, even nail salons) some salons will choose to charge for the full service price while others may be more lenient opting for a 50% charge instead, no matter what the policy, it is there to protect the stylists time, especially as more and more stylists work for themselves nowadays, their time becomes their livelihood!
When someone makes an appointment, that time slot is then taken up and no one else can book during that time, so if a client does not show OR cancels very late, this does not give the salon/stylist an opportunity to call someone else that could be on the wait list to fill the slot. So without a cancellation fee to cover for the loss, the stylist could potentially lose out twice. Most salons will not charge if they are able to fill the slot even under 24hours, but we are not always so lucky.
In situations where color is involved this could mean a time slot of up to 3hours is being held and again if the client no shows or late cancels, this is a huge loss to the colorist, who will have been there ready and waiting to work.
Of course life can be unpredictable, emergencies happen and clients don't mean to miss their appointments, but all we (as stylists) ask of you is to please be more considerate and respectful of the stylists time, and understand that the policy was put in place for the protection of the stylist or anyone else in a professional situation. Sumo Tech by Bumble & Bumble
Alot of people I know love this product, especially for those with shorter very straight hair, it is used as a finishing product to make the hair messier and clumpy looking, which I must say it does do very well. As I mentioned before, Bumble & Bumble are, I think, one of the best companies for styling products.
My only problem with this product is that the consistency is so stiff and hard that I find it hard to get it out. And then once out, its takes a little while to massage it in your hands to make it more pliable to apply onto the hair, without leaving any clumps of product on the hairshaft. They say you can warm up the product first by applying abit of heat with the hairdryer, but for me, its more about ease and speed, so unless I had alot of styling time in the mornings then I would tend to pick something else up thats easier to apply.

I was flicking through some websites and magazines the other day and came across some fairly cool looking hair from Hong Kong. Movie stars and their hair in Hong Kong can be abit hit and miss, in my opinion, I feel that some go so overboard that it can look abit ‘tacky’ and ‘dodgy’, completely missing the mark of ‘naturally cool’ as shown in my post about Aaron Kwok : (
