I’ve been dying to share this post with you on Maggie Cheung (Man Yuk), one of my all time favorite Asian actresses. For those of you who aren't familiar with Maggie, she has been in alot of movies, afew being ‘In the Mood for Love’, ‘Irma Vep"’, ‘Hero’, and ‘Clean’.

I had the pleasure in working with Maggie once in Los Angeles, (as well as the gorgeous Michael Wong) for an Ericsson commercial. I just happened to be lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time, just as they were casting for the HK ad campaign, (which turned out to be so successful, it was cited as a case study in the Harvard Business Review). I was hired to do the hair for the main actors including Maggie and Michael and a couple of other Asian American actors. This was such a surprise for me as I was hired before I found out who I would be working on. Initially it was meant to be Gong Li, who had trouble getting her work permit fast enough so it ended up being Maggie instead, much to my delight.

Memories of the commercial:

I found her to be charming and lovely as well as a little mischievous as she kept fluffing her hair to make it more ‘punky’ while the directors of Ericsson kept telling me to ‘calm it down’. She also told me that she’d always wanted to be a hairdresser and even applied to work at Sassoon’s while living in the UK, luckily for her, she didn't get in, and the rest as you know, is history!

I also found this shoot to be quite challenging as Maggie's hair was permed into a tight afro look at the time, so my first challenge for the first scene was to flatten and calm it all down into a slicked look!! A fantastic 3 day shoot in Malibu at a gorgeous house, great fun memories. And I must say Thank’s to both Maggie and Michael for their hand written referrals to put towards my green card application to come to the US.

While on the subject of Maggie Cheung, I’ve put together a slideshow of some of her looks that I love.. Enjoy!

There is something soooo wrong with this hairstyle, don't you think? Wait, though, the color is good, at least the shade is a good one, no signs of triad looking yellow bleach at least!
But his haircut and style is not very good looking for his face shape is it? If only he blended in his fringe with the ‘explosive’ looking bit at the top, it could've been a good punky look, but instead with that separation, it looks like he’s got ‘mall’ fringe!!

Hit or Miss, Beauty and the Bath

I just felt the need to share my latest experience of stick on nail varnish with you. As a hair stylist I had given up on painting my nails because as soon as I had a painted it on, the varnish would either chip off or become goo-ey, because the ingredients in some hair products would start to strip away the varnish.
Then I came across an ad in a magazine introducing Sally Hansen’s stick on Polish!! This I had to try. So for my first attempt I chose a fishnet pattern and following the instructions and not even being that intense about it.

I stuck them on one by one while watching a movie at the same time. I was so surprised at how easy it was. Once it was pressed on, you then use the nailfile provided and file off the excess length! The hardest part about it I thought was the peeling of the backing, and you also have to make sure you choose the right size for each finger, as I had left a couple of half nails undone.
Nevertheless, I still found it successful and the best part about it was that I tested it with allsorts of products that I used on clients hair and I managed to keep it on (no chips or stickiness) for over a week and it stilled looked good. To remove it, you simply use nail polish remover, I’m totally convinced and I’ll be going onto my lace nails next : )
Here’s other colors that are available and also their ‘how to’ pics:

My final 10 haircut choices done by Dove Palmer...

Dove Palmer is Creative Director for Vidal Sassoon Advanced Academy in London, UK. He also ran the Masters Academy for them too and has made 3 DVD step by step videos as well helped in contributing at least 12 haircut pictures for the Academy Photo collection. I came across Dove's work on Facebook and instantly LOVED the exquisite work done by him. Funnily enough Dove turned out to have the same mentor as I did back in the day. Stacey Broughton (also from Sassoons) has been his mentor since he went to work for Sassoon's. I definitely spotted the Stacey traits in the haircuts.
I have so many different styles to show you that he has done over the years that I have decided to split them up into 3 slide shows so that we can make the most of showcasing his work. Dove's specialty seems to be on Asian hair, whether its because he tours to the Far East to do seminars so much (and for up to 4months at a time) or maybe its because his wife has so many friends that needs to utilise his craft, I don't know, but whatever it may be, I'm so happy to be able to show you his creative work on Asian hair. Here is the final slide for you, I will certainly be looking out for future work of Dove's to show you.
Thanks Dove for letting me share with my readers.

Davines Love Shampoo for Curly Hair..

DSC02206

Sorry the pictures abit crooked!

Davine’s (I pronounce it Dav-ve-ness) LOVE Shampoo made for wavy and curly hair – the first thing I have to say about this shampoo is how lovely it smells!! It makes you want to use it just so you can sniff the lovely essences that Davines have used in it. This shampoo is rich, so for fine hair you need to be careful about using this, it could leave your hair quite flat, although very soft and gorgeous smelling. Depending on whether you like your hair to be on the flat side, I found the Love shampoo to be just abit too heavy for me even though my hair is very thick and coarse. But there again, I do prefer my hair to be rougher and bigger looking so do bear that in mind too when making your choice.

Again this shampoo comes in a handy travel size which you can re-fill over and over. Very handy!

Aguri Sagimori 2009 Japan Fashion Wk

This creative crazy ‘do’ was done for the Japan 2009 Fashion Week, for designer Aguri Sagimori.
Love how creative and over the top the Japanese are with their interpretations, and especially for Fashion Shows. Not exactly the type of style you’d ask for when thinking of proms or balls or dates but ‘perfect’ for what it was intended.
